Tuesday TV guide: Parkinson: Masterclass is terrific as Michael Parkinson interviews magician Dynamo

Alongside the magic, he discusses the Crohn’s disease that nearly killed him, being bullied and being introduced to the father he hadn’t seen for 14 years

Talk: Parkinson and Dynamo
With Michael McIntyre the latest comedian to chance his arm as a chat show host and Joanna Lumley piloting her own new talk series later this week, Michael Parkinson proves there’s still a place for his old fashioned kind of chat show.

His series – very much in the vein of the American series Inside The Actors’ Studio – continues with Bradford magician Dynamo in the spotlight.

And he’s a terrific interviewee – happy to discuss at length the Crohn’s disease that nearly killed him, a childhood of being bullied, his fascination with superheroes and a very awkward introduction to the father who he hadn’t seen for 14 years.

All this is in his autobiography of course, and Parkinson doesn’t do a very good job of hiding the fact that he already knows most of the answers to his questions – even correcting Dynamo on occasion.

There are clips too of some of Dynamo’s most attention grabbing stunts – walking on water across the Thames and strolling down the side of the LA Times building before Dynamo performs some magic with the audience in the second half.

“Amaze me,” Parkinson invites him – and Dynamo doesn’t disappoint.

* Parkinson: Masterclass is on Sky Arts 1 tonight at 8pm

History TV18 brings its biggest star, Dynamo, to India

The renowned illusionist creates magical moments in Mumbai and Varanasi

After astounding people and celebrities across the globe, internationally acclaimed magician, Dynamo, recently visited India. As a part of this trip, HISTORY TV18, one of the leading factual entertainment channels in India, organized a special event for Dynamo to meet his fans in Mumbai on March 21, 2014. The crowd, consisting of over 300 enthusiastic fans, was left spellbound by his magic and illusions.
Prior to dazzling Mumbai, Dynamo chose to stay true to his profession and love for all things magical with his decision to create his own miracles in the spiritual capital of India – Varanasi. Along the banks of the Ganges, he attempted to unravel some of the mystery of this holy city, while simultaneously adding to the intrigue and charm of this place.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangeetha Aiyer, Vice President & Head – Marketing A+E Networks | TV18, stated, “Ever since our launch, we have been pushing the envelope on unique content. Viewers love a chance to interact with their favourite global talent from these shows. Thus, their visit to India creates a lot of buzz like the Pawn Stars India Tour last year. We are humbled by the adulation and success of the Dynamo event and delighted by the excitement of our viewers to see him perform live.“
Steven Frayne, better known as Dynamo, is one of the greatest illusionists of our times, effortlessly combining his amazing sleight-of-hand skills with mind-blowing magic. The celebrated magician has been seen walking on the River Thames, turning lottery tickets into money in the presence of Robbie Williams, and levitating in front of James Corden and live studio audiences.
